An Excerpt

In the shadow of the reaper

Life is hard. It’s a performance art. As anyone who’s ever watched a child on a piece of equipment in the park knows, it’s relatively easy to climb to the top of the slide. You think it’s difficult on the way up, but then you are there. And all the stress and trials it took to get there look insignificant from the top of the climb. But then you have to find the courage to go down again. But if you really want the maximum amount of pain and discomfort all you really need to do is tank the dismount.

I remember watching gymnastics when I was a kid. I watched this gymnast do beautiful flips and soar through the air like an angel, and everything was going right, and then shey’d overthought it and tried too hard.  She landed after twisting slightly, shattering her thighbone and lying on the floor, crying like a baby.

Children have similar issues going down the slide. Everything’s right till you get to almost the bottom and then you lean back. And whack the back of your head on the sharp edge of the slide as you shoot off the end onto the sand.

Getting old is much like this. You’ve been going through just fine. Cruising through your emotions and experiences. You think you’ve worked it out. Looks like everything’s good all of a sudden you find yourself at the top of the slide with only one way out. And the only question is, is it going to be a long, slow ride done with grace and style or a short one?
Some of this is your choice. Perhaps you are the person who decides to go face first screaming all the way down. Or maybe it’s going to be one of those long, slow, painful, drawn-out processes where you’re lying on your back, knocking your head from side to side until finally, when you finally get to the dismount, there’s nothing left of you but a broken shell of your former self.

Harry’s mom Lilibeth was definitely on that slide. How close to the bottom was anybody’s guess but if you’d asked her, she was going to live till she was 120. Which, since she’d been saying that since 80 and she was now pretty close to 100, she may have actually been correct. Personally, I was hoping that when my time came, I won’t reach the slide until I was ready to go.  Then take the short slide. And check out quickly shooting off the end into nothing without biting through my lip or pissing myself on the way out.
Mrs. Violet Young’s slide was over and she was dead on the 12th floor sundeck overlooking the pool in a pink athleisure suit and new Mexican sombrero for at least half an hour before anyone noticed.

I was silly enough to find the body.

 Thrilling Mystery with Fiery Twists!

This fast-paced mystery keeps you on edge as Sophie investigates a string of arsons that quickly escalate into something far more sinister. The case is filled with dead ends, a feisty fire marshall, and a suspect pool that seems endless—until the bodies start piling up. The plot is full of suspense, twists, and just the right amount of humor to balance the tension. If you love compelling mysteries with strong female leads, this is a must-read! Can’t wait for the next book in the series!
